Περίληψη:Hagia Sophia, as a unique monument of the World's Cultural Heritage, strongly demonstrates the need for integrated conservation actions and interdisciplinary scientific cooperation. Within the framework of a trilateral protocol agreement between Princeton, Bogazici and National Technical University of Athens, the following achievements have been obtained: - an "interdisciplinary research proposal for the earthquake protection of Hagia Sophia" . - the revealing of the original structure has been suggested strong motion instrumentation for the assessment of the earthquake response - an interdisciplinary approach has been applied to the study of dynamic behavior and earthquake response of Hagia Sophia - the parallel study concerning structures and materials, of important monuments in Byzantine Konstantinople, - the study of Hagia Sophia historic materials- The original mortars, which have deteriorated by natural weathering, salt ' decay with the investigation of materials properties and especially mortars and bricks, used in its masonry are presented. The longevity of the examined historic composites is more or less related to the compatibility to the wall constituents, as far as the raw materials, the mortar production process and the physico-chemical and microstructural properties are concerned, which allows for continuous stresses and strains. Hence, the recreation of the Hagia Sophia mortars should be attempted through a reverse engineering approach to simulate the historic mortars. (AU)
