Περίληψη:Ayvalik (Kydonies) was a Greek town, which had been a commercial and cultural centre on the northwest coast of Asia Minor from the second half of the 17th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. The Taxiarchis church, built in 1844, was one of the most prominent religious buildings of Ayvalik. After the population exchange between Greece and Turkey according to the terms of the Lausanne Treaty in 1923, the building lost its original function and was abandoned for some time. In the time of the Turkish Republic it was used as a depot and due to this function it had been subjected to several interventions. The building was registered as a Historical Building of Cultural Value, while Ayvalik was declared an Urban Historical Site. Although the church was decided to be used as a museum and thus in 1979 it was given to the possession and responsibility of the Ministry of Culture, it continued since then to be subjected to physical deterioration. This study attempts to describe the Taxiarchis basic architectural features, to define its present situation and to report on the building materials mineralogical analysis. (AU)
