Περίληψη:The fortification of Rhodes took on its final form which we see today in the period fbetween 1457 and 1465.The first interventions on the fortifications were carried out by the Ottomans directly after the occupation of the island in 1522 and continued throughout the Turkish Occupation. The Italians, who occupied Rhodes in 1922, removed every kind of addition of later construction from the fortifications, they also removed the Muslim and Jewish cemeteries from the Knights' zone of security (glacis) which surrounded the town, and they transformed the area into a large wood. The most important interventions on the fortifications made by the Italian Administration were those of a town-planning nature, such as the preservation and functioning of a mediaeval harbour and the opening up of four new gates to improve traffic flow.During the Second World War the Mediaeval Town was bombed mercilessly, with the result that many monuments inside the town were destroyed, along with large sections of the fortifications (seaward gate, Gate of St Paul the Apostle, the tower on the windmill quay etc).Following the unification of Rhodes with Greece, during the years 1947-1951 the Greek Archaeological Service repaired the damage to the seaward fortifications and during the 1950's and 1960's continued its work, restoring the damage caused to the landward walls. After the restoration of the ravages caused by wartime bombing, preservation was begun on other points of the fortifications and continued until 1983 on monuments such as the Fortress of St. Nicholas, the tower on the windmill quay, and the fighting position of the 'tongue' of Germany etc. (AU)
